REFLECTION

Experience
My experience in studying this module was good and very memorable. When I first started this semester, I only had very little knowledge about typography, so these all are new to me. Although it was difficult and time consuming at first, as I got used to the theories and techniques, I can feel the difference. I learned many things from this Typography class, including how to make a professional editorial layout, create my own font, make a typographic sticker, etc. Sometimes I find it difficult to complete the tasks at hand, but I also feel helped by the instructions, information and knowledge given by Mr Vinod clearly and in detail. Furthermore, I got many useful feedback from Mr Vinod, which helped me to improve my work better. At the same time, when listening to Mr Vinod comment on my classmate's works during the feedback session did also helps me a lot. I realize that learning typography throughout these 14 weeks has greatly enhanced my skills as a designer not just in understanding type, but it has instilled better analysis and an improvement in my general design process. Overall, it was a very challenging class, but I feel very satisfied, realizing that I managed to complete all my work.

Observations
There are several things that I have observed during my 14 weeks of studying typography. Firstly, I observe that typography plays an important role in all aspects. Choosing the right typeface and utilizing type expressions can make a huge impact on the design. Even how small things like kerning, alignments, and overshoots will affect the whole design. When I was taught about the anatomy of type, I started to be able to observe and analyze the nuances of the font typefaces characteristics easily. I noticed that actually countless typefaces have their own uniqueness and it's very amazing to know that. After learning this module, helped me realize that every design we see everywhere, in a website, advertisement or packaging, was all created by people who put a lot of effort and time into it.

Findings
I discovered that there is one crucial thing, which is progress. When documenting our progress, we can see how we detailly complete each task in every stage. Having a lot of progress to look at and compare them with each other helps me to notice the little details and mistakes I made and what I can do to improve them. For me, I felt tough at first as I'm not used to screenshot all my processes and recording them down, I was kind of muddle on handling it, and the information are messy, but compared with now, I'm glad that I'm getting right in track to keep all my work systematically. I found that typography is not as simple as I thought. There is a lot of history behind it and a lot of effort that must be done to achieve the fonts that we meet today. Especially after learning to make fonts and deconstructing reference fonts, I really appreciate every font that has been created. Through this module, I found that by understanding the disciplines of typography and how the software work, I could improve my overall design skill. I am very grateful that I got the opportunity to learn this typography class.
