EXERCISE 1 - AUDIO DUBBING
Instruction
Choose or record sound clips to be used to create sound effects to bring a
video clip to live. The clips will be provided. Students are required to
identify the visual components from the video clip that needs sound.
Requirements for Audio Dubbing:
- Editing in Premiere Pro
- Dialogue: Audio track 1-4 (one character one trac)
- Hard Sound Effects: Audio track 5-7
- Ambience Sound: Audio track 8-10
- Edit voice from female to male, male to female, human to cute animal/adult to kid: Premiere Pro → Audio Effects → Pitch Shifter → Semi tones)
Process
For this exercise, Mr. Martin provided us with a short clip which is
part of the movie called Munich with silent background, and we were
asked to add sound effects for that clip. During week 3 practical class,
we are assigned into groups to list down the suitable sound effects for
each scene.

For the dialog part, I recorded my voiceover using my phone and inserted
the clips into premiere pro. Besides, I also searched for additional
sound effects and ambient street sound for the scenes to provide the
locational atmosphere.

Then, I started to place the audio files on timelines and start editing
in premiere pro.

According to what I have found online, the ideal level for the voice is
average at -12dB. So after importing the audio to sync it with the video
clip, I tried to adjust all of them within -12dB.

Also, one of the scenes with dialog is talking with phone, I used a
website to help me to apply the phone call voice effect.

EXERCISE 2 - SOUND SHAPING
Instruction
For the 2nd exercise, we were given 3 audio files and were required to
pick one to create the sound shaping for the 4 types of scenarios in
Adobe Audition.
- Voice of phone call. [mono]
- Voice coming from inside of closet. [stereo]
- Voice of toilet/bathroom. [stereo]
- Underground cave. [stereo]

Process
1. Phone call
Firstly, in Adobe Audition, I created a multitrack session, named and
saved it. Then I went to the Parametric Equalizer to edit the phone call
sound effects. To create that, I bring down the Bass, Treble, and
raise Mid Range between 500Hz to 2kHz.

Fig. 2.4 – First attempt on phone call effect
After editing the phone sound effects following what Mr. Martin taught us
in the tutorial video, I wanted to explore more with using the presets,
and I felt that the outcome was more similar to the phone sound
effects.

2. Inside of closet
I started to create a new multitrack and applied Parametric Equalizer by
editing the Treble to the bottom, Bass remain, raise Mid Range to the
top. And the result shows a muffled sound like speaking with wrapping it
with something. And I have trimmed a little part of the audios due to
some repetition mistake errors in the audio.

3. Toilet
To create something that speaks like an echo in the toilet, I started by
creating a new multitrack and applying Parametric Equalizer with reverb
sound effects. I experimented with the presets “Depressing Karaoke Bar”
and edited its characteristic and output level.

4. Underground cave
I started by creating a new multitrack, same as the toilet sound effect,
I used the same technique by using the reverb sound effect. And I used
the present called “Bigger room ambience” and then and edit its
characteristic and output level.

REFLECTION
This was my first time getting exposed to properly edit videos. At first it was a bit overwhelming to tweak with the videos and getting used to using Adobe Premiere Pro, however, after exploring and playing around with it, I soon got used to it. Overall it was fun doing the audio dubbing and also getting to learn and understand how to manipulate audios with the tools. Although it requires some time to work in Audition as well, until I reach the targeted outcome of the voice, however, it was rather enjoyable to just tweak the voices and experiment on it.
