PROJECT 1

Experience Design Project Proposal

For this project, we were instructed to create a proposal for the development of an AR mobile application aimed at enhancing the daily lives of users through immersive experience design. Our task was to brainstorm interesting ideas for this AR app that could transition from a screen-based experience to something that interacts with the physical world. Consequently, we were tasked with creating a proposal that not only presents our ideas but also outlines how users will engage with them. This project serves as the foundation for our upcoming work throughout the entire module. Prior to beginning the proposal, we were required to brainstorm three AR app concepts and seek approval from Mr. Razif.

Firstly, I began my project by conducting online research to study AR experiences, particularly those related to mobile applications. This initial research aimed to provide me with a better understanding of the possibilities and features that I could incorporate into my own project. Following this research, I engaged in idea exploration and brainstorming, which led to the development of four distinct ideation concepts for the AR app.

Idea 1 - World Explorer
The World Explorer app offers an educational and immersive experience for users interested in global landmarks and architecture. By scanning a country on a printed map, users unlock 3D models of iconic landmarks, like the Eiffel Tower in France, for interactive exploration and learning.

Idea 2 - Grocery Shopper
The Grocery Shopper app uses augmented reality to improve your shopping experience. It lets users scan items in the store and displays 3D overlays with product info like name, price, description, and category. Users can also add items to your cart, making shopping efficient and informative. For instance, scanning an orange at "Jaya Grocery" shows you its details and category, helping you make informed choices.

Idea 3 – Food Menu
The Augmented Food Menu app uses AR technology to enhance the dining experience. Users scan a dish name on a restaurant's menu with their smartphones to view a 3D preview, detailed description, ingredients, nutrition, and allergens. Items can be added to the cart, orders personalized, and special requests made, ensuring a seamless and customized dining experience. This app empowers users to make informed choices, order confidently, and enjoy an interactive dining experience.

Idea 4 – Art Gallery
This app offers users an educational and captivating experience, bringing famous artworks to life in 3D. Users can choose iconic artworks, including paintings like the Mona Lisa and Starry Night, as well as sculptures. Through their smartphones, users enter a virtual art gallery where these artworks become interactive 3D representations. This immersive experience lets users explore details, techniques, and historical context in a new and engaging way. For instance, selecting the Mona Lisa displays it on the virtual gallery wall with music and explanations, enhancing the art appreciation experience.

After receiving feedback from Mr. Razif, he approved the first and fourth ideas and suggested that I conduct further research and expand on these ideas to make a comparison and determine which one is the best choice. After careful consideration, I have decided to select the first idea, which is the World Explorer app, for my project. As I have more interesting and exciting ideas to explore within this concept, especially because I am passionate about traveling and have a deep fascination for exploring iconic and unique architecture. Therefore, I believe that choosing this idea is an excellent decision for me to delve into and experiment with during this project.

Moving to the next stage, I have continued with further development to create the final proposal based on the provided requirements and guidelines.

FEEDBACK

Week 4 - 20.9.2023 (Proposal with 4 Ideations)

For Idea 1
  • Consider adding a 360-degree view of the landmark.
  • Explore the possibility of creating a 3D model of the landmark that allows users to adjust its size or view it in actual live size, enabling users to experience how the landmark would appear in their room or space.
  • Brainstorm additional engaging experiences or features for the app beyond just showcasing the 3D object.
  • Expand upon the Augmented Reality (AR) experiences further.
For Idea 2
  • I do not recommend choosing this idea because it may not be feasible to scan the item consistently as the items are not the same all the time.
  • This concept might work better with the integration of AI.
For Idea 3
  • I do not recommend choosing this idea because similar concepts have been attempted by past students, and they have faced challenges in creating compelling 3D animations of food.
For the Idea 4
  • Consider incorporating additional features, such as animations that activate when scanning artworks, making them come to life. For example, for "Starry Night," users could see the painting animate.
  • To make it more captivating, think about localizing the app. In Malaysia, users could explore landmarks like the Museum Negara and art galleries.
  • To expand on Ideas 1 and 4, delve into more detail, and provide visuals and sketches to illustrate the proposed AR constructs and experiences. This will help in conveying your ideas more effectively.

Week 5 - 30.9.2023 (Final Idea Proposal with Sketches and Mock-Ups)

  • To enhance the user experience, consider implementing a feature where users can simply scan a map, eliminating the need to set up a physical space. This way, they can view 3D models directly on the map, positioned above each country. Upon touching a specific country on the map, the corresponding page for that landmark, such as the Eiffel Tower, will appear.
  • Whether to include a navigation bar is up to your judgment. If you believe it would improve the user experience and serve a purpose, then feel free to add it. However, ensure that it serves a specific and beneficial function.
  • Instead of incorporating a large number of countries, focusing on three countries could be sufficient, as long as these countries offer compelling and interactive experiences. With this approach, you can allocate more time and resources to enhance the quality of the content and experiences for these three countries, ensuring a better overall user experience.
