Reflection

What have I learnt in this module?
For this Design Principles module, I got a deeper understanding of design fundamentals and knowing how to apply those principles well to create a good composition. I really appreciate how Dr Charles always shares his design thinking and experience in the design process and the additional record lecture explained by Dr JinChi. Even though I had self-learnt some of the design principles before this module started, the gestalt theory is one of the parts that impressed me as I didn't see it before, and I felt surprised how design can be related to psychology. Besides, during the consultation with Dr Charles for Project 2, I got the new cognitive of how Dr Charles said that creating a design work is not apple to apple, design is about interpretation, an artwork needs to have a story or a relation to something. So, when it comes to the design process, I will always ask myself, 'why did I choose this? 'what is the main focus you want your viewer to see', 'what does this artwork relate to?'. This is how I started to improve my design thinking and interpretation. Furthermore, looking back on the compilation of all my artwork, I realize how I gradually know how to visual analyze others' art pieces. I used to just look at the big picture and only think they were beautiful. But, for now, when I find any stunning artworks, I will observe and analyze them in detail. I tend to think of how they match the colour, what principles are used in this artwork, and what information the creator wants to bring out. Hence, this even made me appreciate art when I always felt it so amazed and interesting to see how they create their works.

What did I enjoy the most?
The moment that I feel very satisfied and happy when I look back on the artworks that I have done, I feel very proud of myself that I could actually complete them all in a short timeframe. I could also realize my improvement from the first exercise to the final project. Moreover, I also felt very enjoy when looking at my classmate's artwork. I even felt very amazed at how they are so talented and creative when creating their artwork. I have learned a lot from them by observing how they develop their concept or theme in their works and their amazing drawing technique.

What did I not enjoy the most?
To be honest, there were sometimes that I found myself struggling with the design process. I'm a person who does things very slowly, and I would always think too much. Sometimes I would also feel very overwhelmed and stressed when the deadline is getting closer, but I am still stuck in the stages of idea exploration and still can't figure out what I should do. So, I always felt like I was rushing to complete the assignment. But still have much appreciation for Dr Charles that he is very caring and understanding. He knew that some of us were celebrating Chinese New Year and also rushing for other module deadlines, so he decided to extend the deadline for us to give us extra time to complete the assignment.

What have I learnt about myself through this module?
This module has given me many self-discovery opportunities as we were encouraged to bring out the authenticity and essence of ourselves. When doing the project, I came to realize that I don't actually know myself that well. But now, I am probably getting to know myself more and my inner voice in this module. Through this learning journey, I could also learn to be more confident and open when it comes to creating a design as I have come to fully understand and accept that there is no right and wrong in design.

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
After learning this module, I'm grateful that I have changed the way and the mindset when I look at an artwork. This module has definitely made me learn to observe and analyze. Besides, I felt that I was getting more confident with my artwork as I'm always doubting myself and worried that I'm doing anything wrong or thinking that I'm not good enough. After the first assessment, I was so surprised as the result was better than I thought. This made me decide to reframe my thoughts and mindset. I'm trying to build my confidence with openly and more optimistic by trying everything with my best, and the main crucial thing is gaining experience. Furthermore, I was also trying to step out of my comfort zone to try different things that I'm not familiar with. I decided to attempt digital drawing, although is a little bit difficult for me at first as I needed to watch a lot of tutorials and practise to be familiar with digital drawing. But it's worth it that I can take this opportunity to explore a variety of brushes and create different types of effects and textures. In contrast, what has not changed is I still can't manage well with my mental health. It's still the same with my previous foundation year that I would always feel overwhelmed with the deadline.

What could be improved in this module?
Learning through this module,  I feel that I have so many things that need to improve. Firstly, I will definitely want to learn to manage my time and mental health well, as this is the main thing that has struggled me during the semester. Secondly,  I wish to improve my drawing skills and technique. These are the things that I plan to do during my semester break and prepare well for the next semester. Overall, I think this module was fun and very helpful! I get to develop various drawing styles and modes. I also feel grateful for everything in this class, the good study atmosphere in class, helpful and tolerant lectures and friendly classmates that made me enjoy this class throughout this semester.
